Position Detail:

FirstLight Power has Seasonal Stewardship Positions– Aquatic Invasive Plant Removal staff openings for workers to join our Land Management team at Turners Falls in Montague, MA.

TRAINING IS PROVIDED

This is a TEMPORARY position from June 01-September 01, 2023 and is Part-time.

Work shifts are available Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 am- 2:30 pm and staff will choose shifts that fit their schedule. If a date is canceled with fewer than 72 hours’ prior notice, staff who have committed to work that day will be paid for 2 hours.

This part-time position is a great opportunity for those who enjoy working outdoors and contributing to a healthier watershed.

The Seasonal Stewardship staff will hand-pull invasive water chestnut plants in Turners Falls, MA. Target areas are the Turners Falls power canal and between the boat barrier and the dam in Turners Falls, MA. Work involves launching and paddling a canoe, pulling floating plants, and unloading bags of pulled plants from the canoe. FirstLight will provide safety training, boats, paddles, PFDs, and all equipment necessary for the project.

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

Launch and paddle a canoe
Pull floating plants
Load and unload bags of pulled plants
Work as a team to clear plants
Job Qualifications / Skills

Must have high School diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree in biological or environmental science or education is a plus
Experience in fisheries biology, natural sciences or education is a plus
Must be able to commit to at least 5 dates
Must be able to work entire shift of 8:00 am – 2:30 pm on days worked
Desire to work outdoors for 6.5 hours in a variety of weather conditions
Must follow all safety procedures
Desire to work as part of a team and improve watershed habitat
Must hold a current, valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
Must be able to pass background and drug test
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a variety of weather conditions such as rain and heat
Ability to navigate uneven terrain which may result in exposure to poison ivy, ticks and biting insects
Ability to be physically mobile, board and un-board canoe independently, and frequently stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch
Ability to swim and paddle a canoe on flat water for approximately ¼ mile
Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. and carry a canoe with a partner
