Outreach & Stranding Specialist

Office-based/Plymouth, Massachusetts

We are a small ocean conservation non-profit with a global impact looking for a highly motivated, creative, organized, inclusive individual who wants to loudly and proudly work to grow our communications channels. Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) is based in Plymouth, MA where a team of 10 individuals work to protect the marine mammals who play an integral role in protecting the health of our planet. We are looking for someone to grow and manage the development/delivery of WDC’s boater outreach programs including Whale SENSE, See A Spout, and Sharing the Seas, while supporting our education and Marine Animal Rescue and Response programs. The hybrid position is based in Plymouth, MA and affords the right candidate the opportunity to see marine mammals, join our Marine Animal Rescue and Response program, and engage in our education and outreach projects.

Role responsibilities:

With partners, deliver the creative & strategic development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of WDC boater outreach programs including Whale SENSE, See A Spout, and Sharing the Seas.

Support the creative & strategic development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of WDC education programs.

Support all aspects of responding to live and dead marine mammal strandings within WDC’s dedicated response area, and where and when possible, beyond our coverage area and in support of neighboring networks.

Help with the recruitment, management, and training of interns and volunteers.

Maintain the WDC science databases and maintain field work equipment.

Provide content for and support the creation of print and digital communications including newsletters as well as supporter and program materials.

Represent WDC professionally and personably as you engage with students, supporters, and members of the general public.

Use data to evaluate and improve strategies.

Stay informed of applicable emerging science and conservation issues.

Work with fundraising team to support the work of WDC including supporting grant applications and reporting, corporate partnerships, and campaigns.

Work to improve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the marine conservation and science field.

What we need you to bring to the table:

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to be in contact with live and dead wildlife
Must be able to work under challenging environmental conditions
Have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license or the ability to obtain one
Must be able to walk on rough terrain during inclement weather, swim, and lift 50 pounds
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
High level of self-motivation with excellent organizational and creative skills including the ability to reprioritize and pivot as emerging issues develop
Enjoyment of working in a fast-paced, evolving and growing environment as part of a small but powerful team
The ability to execute tasks, with accuracy, on tight or unexpected deadlines
Willingness to work some nights, weekends, and holidays
A passion for positively representing WDC and our mission to a diverse audience
A desire to make diversity, equity and inclusion a priority in their work
Must be able to legally work in the United States
What we’d love you to bring in addition:

Experience in public speaking and written content creation
Experience in marine mammal stranding response and necropsies
Experience working with Microsoft 365, Filemaker, and Salesforce a plus
Basic video editing and/or digital media production skills are a plus
3–5 years’ work experience in education or marine science/conservation or a closely related field

Salary

Salary is based on metrics set forward by the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act, so the range for this position is broad depending on the candidate’s level of education, experience, ability to travel, and management responsibilities. As a result, the salary for the position is set at a minimum of $35,000 to a maximum of $50,000 annually.
