Position: Climate Smart Lead Technical Assistance Provider
HOURS: 20-25 hours/week
Remote position, but must live in Massachusetts. Some travel within Massachusetts is required.

Opportunity

The Climate Smart Lead Technical Assistance Provider (TAP) position is an opportunity to help farmers implement climate smart practices to increase climate resilience and food sovereignty, and to support the expansion of local market value for crops grown using climate smart practices, as part of the NOFA/Mass Climate Smart Technical Assistance Team. The Lead TAP will help guide the team’s approach to technical assistance, rooted in strong agricultural knowledge and understanding.

Responsibilities include building relationships with farmers in the region, recording analytical data, mapping farm fields, and delivering recommendations to the farm based on findings, including assisting farmers in developing a whole farm plan based on climate resilient management strategies. The TAP will work with farmers from initial project stages through to practice implementation and verification, with technical assistance varying by farm and by practice. This position presents an opportunity for an experienced agricultural worker or professional to help lead a diverse and multidisciplinary team contributing to farming, communications, policy, equity and inclusion, and soil health.

Responsibilities

This position will play a pivotal role in building relationships with farmers in the region, implementing climate-resilient strategies, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices. In an advisory capacity, the Lead TAP will work with the NOFA/Mass Education Department to provide ongoing training and support for our technical assistance staff. Key responsibilities include:
Farmer Outreach & Partner Relations
Build trusting relationships with farmers through a variety of methods, including phone calls and in-person farm visits, and serve as an advocate for the Climate Smart initiative.
Work to ensure our technical assistance services effectively reach BIPOC farmers throughout our service region.
Serve as the NOFA/Mass liaison for Pasa’s Soil Health Benchmark Study (SHBS), recruiting and enrolling farmers for a soil health-based research study.
Collaborate with external partner organizations in fulfillment of project goals.

Internal Mentorship & Coordination
Serve as Lead TAP on the team of NOFA/Mass TAPs, providing mentorship and guidance in data collection, analysis, and farm management to fellow TAPs. Help guide weekly meetings and build the capacity of our technical assistance team.
Proactively identify and communicate information and challenges faced in the field to facilitate system improvements within NOFA/Mass and among our Climate Smart partner organizations. Engage employees in these problem-solving processes to enhance their skills.

Farm-Level Technical Assistance
Securely collect farm and field level information in a timely and respectful manner from contract initiation through completion, using a range of digital and analog tools.
Provide administrative and technical guidance to farmers in developing a whole farm plan, including the selection of applicable and Climate Smart initiative-supported NRCS Conservation practices.
Contribute to data collection for continued monitoring and measuring of the impacts of implemented climate smart practices on soil health and greenhouse gas mitigation.

 

Qualifications

Awareness of equity issues in agriculture and commitment to racial justice.
Agricultural experience with a knowledge of environmental practices and principles.
At least 3 years experience working on farms or with farmers.
Awareness of climate resilience strategies and an ability to work collaboratively with farmers for implementation of appropriate strategies.
Ability to travel throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut to meet with farmers year-round.
Excellent problem solving, attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills.
Self-motivated and able to work independently in a remote work environment.
Ability to maintain regular computer working hours, with consistent attendance at week day remote meetings. Proficiency with Google workspace; Zoom; data management; social media outreach; and other relevant tech platforms.

Ideal candidate may also have:
Spanish language fluency with strong written and verbal communication skills
Connections to the farming community (vegetables, dairy, grains, other specialty crops)
A bachelor’s degree in a related field
Familiarity with field based geographic information systems (GIS)
Familiarity with the USDA’s COMET-Planner and COMET-FarmTM carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas reduction estimation tools
Experience working with USDA/NRCS programs
Experience with data collection and organization
Extensive experience and skills, including animal husbandry, greenhouse management, windbreak tree plantings, and grant acquisition from the farmer’s perspective

Compensation
Position pay scale starts at $26/hour, with a budgeted 3% cost of living increase per year.

Other position information
This job can generally be accomplished from home. Employees are asked to provide appropriate basic office equipment to facilitate working remotely. Tech stipends are available.
Hours are flexible, yet the Lead TAP is expected to have regular daytime availability for weekday meetings and trainings; occasional evening and weekend commitments.
Employees are expected to attend 2 NOFA/Mass in-person retreats each year, virtual staff meetings, winter and summer conferences, and virtual department meetings.
Benefits: $75/month reimbursement available to cover phone & internet; $200/yr tech stipend and $200/yr continuing education stipend are available; reimbursement for work-related travel at Federal mileage reimbursement rate. Employer-sponsored 401k plan available. Paid time off begins with 2 weeks per year; paid sick time and family leave are also available. In addition to the 2 weeks of paid time off at start, NOFA/Mass observes a generous paid holiday schedule including December 24 – January 1 as paid time off. No health insurance benefits available at this time.
