SUMMARY:Tips for Teaching about Bees & Other Native Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:How can we teach about pollinators when we don’t know very much about them? What if we don’t have easy access to pollinator habitat at or near our learning setting? Why is it important to make connections between pollinator health and the growth of staple food crops? As part of last summer’s special issue of Green Teacher magazine on wild native bees\, we published six educational activities — two for each of the Elementary\, Middle\, and Secondary age groups — and we’ll be taking you inside these interactive\, place-based activities so that you leave this webinar better prepared to teach about bees and other pollinators in a meaningful way. There will be numerous opportunities for active participation and discussion\, so come prepared with your pollinator-related questions! \nThis webinar is a follow-up to our Summer 2022 issue of Green Teacher magazine (# 132) about wild native bees\, produced in collaboration with Friends of the Earth Canada. Learn more about The Bee Cause here.

SUMMARY:Wild About Pollinators: Attracting and Teaching about these Winged Wonders
DESCRIPTION:There’s lots of concern about pollinators. We’ve all heard the bad news about drastic declines. But the specifics — who are the pollinators\, what are some of the complex relationships between plants and pollinators? what can we do to support pollinators? — these questions are full of nuance\, and sometimes\, even\, surprises. This webinar explores the importance of pollinators to all life on earth\, and offers the tools we need to support these fascinating insects. \nLorraine Johnson has been writing about native plants and habitat regeneration for 30 years\, in popular books such as 100 Easy-to-Grow Native Plants for Canadian Gardens; The New Ontario Naturalized Garden; Grow Wild!; and her most recent\, co-authored with Sheila Colla\, A Garden for the Rusty-Patched Bumblebee. Lorraine is involved in many community organizations\, such as Project Swallowtail\, and has served on the Boards of the North American Native Plant Society\, LEAF\, Wild Ones\, and other organizations. Her advocacy work includes efforts to reform grass and weeds bylaws in support of biodiversity. What unites her work is the need to reconcile with nature in a healthy relationship. Learn more at https://lorrainejohnson.ca/. \nThis webinar is a follow-up to our Summer 2022 issue of Green Teacher magazine (# 132) about wild native bees\, produced in collaboration with Friends of the Earth Canada. SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and the Future of EE
DESCRIPTION:How can environmental education better embrace environmental justice education to foster a critical understanding of the environment within the context of human political and social actions? Many marginalized communities experiencing environmental injustices are also those most vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis. Environmental educators have a unique opportunity to empower communities living within impacted areas to take a stand for justice with the tools necessary to make change. Environmental educators can also educate those outside of impacted areas to stand up for global environmental justice. Join Parker McMullen Bushman as she discusses the connections between socio-cultural inequities\, environmental issues\, and the power of EE to make change. Register here.

SUMMARY:EPA DEADLINE: President's Environmental Youth Award submission
DESCRIPTION:The President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) recognizes outstanding environmental stewardship projects developed by K-12 youth. The PEYA program promotes awareness of our nation’s natural resources and encourages positive community involvement. Since 1971\, the President of the United States has joined with EPA to recognize young people for protecting our nation’s air\, water\, land\, and ecology. It is one of the most important ways EPA and the Administration demonstrate commitment to environmental stewardship efforts created and conducted by our nation’s youth.\n\nEach year the PEYA program honors a wide variety of projects developed by young students\, school classes and clubs\, youth camps\, and youth organizations to promote environmental awareness and action in schools and communities. Thousands of young people from all 50 states and the U.S. territories have submitted projects to EPA for consideration. Winning projects in the past have demonstrated impact in schools and communities in a wide range of subject areas. Participation in the PEYA program is frequently a life-changing experience for many of the young people and their project sponsors.

SUMMARY:Sharing the Fruits (and Veggies) of our Labor...From Farm to Fork
DESCRIPTION:Register for a Saturday adventure at the rolling farmland of historical Nourse Farm in Westborough.  We’ll offer a chance to discover fun ways to explore the past\, celebrate the present\, and plan for the future as we share the fruits (and veggies) or our labor.  As you might imagine\, Nourse Farm provides a large scope for learning given its age (300 years!) and family contributions to the business (members of the 8th\, 9th\, and 10th generations work there!) \nTasting the harvest from a school garden is a popular way to encourage students (& their families) to try new foods\, especially vegetables.  As such\, MAC will offer hands-on participatory opportunities and resources for ways teachers and students (& their families) can better connect agriculture\, food\, and nutrition.  Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (& 9th generation family member)\, Catherine Nourse runs Veg Out @ Nourse Farm –(a plant-forward food truck) and will be on hand to share her perspectives as an educator and foodie.  Her use of agricultural and nutritional science to create menu items and education activities ensures that when you’re better connected to your food\, you’re more inclined to eat ( and enjoy it.  We believe that this farm-to-fender experience will amplify your own appreciation of locally grown produce and provide ideas to boost student\, family\, (even school) nutrition. \nDress appropriately for the weather (warm jackets & walking shoes) as we explore the farm’s Story Walk and self-guided Historical Hike.  There is a tent available so the workshop will be held rain or shine on Saturday\, October 15. \nBreakfast snack & VERY locally sourced lunch will be served. \n10 PDP’s may be earned at this workshop. \nREGISTER TODAY for this workshop.
