SUMMARY:Back to School with Nature: Supporting Social Emotional Learning and Academic Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Summer may be over but that doesn’t mean that nature needs to stay outdoors as kids head back to school. In this event José G. González\, Cathy Jordan\, Ph.D. and Sheila Williams Ridge\, Ed.D. will discuss how nature impacts mental health\, social emotional learning and cognitive function in support of academic outcomes. Examples of how parents\, caregivers and educators can support inquiry and engagement in the outdoors will also be shared as well as how culture\, policies and inequalities play a role in a child’s ability to benefit from nature engagement.

SUMMARY:Tips for Teaching about Bees & Other Native Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:How can we teach about pollinators when we don’t know very much about them? What if we don’t have easy access to pollinator habitat at or near our learning setting? Why is it important to make connections between pollinator health and the growth of staple food crops? As part of last summer’s special issue of Green Teacher magazine on wild native bees\, we published six educational activities — two for each of the Elementary\, Middle\, and Secondary age groups — and we’ll be taking you inside these interactive\, place-based activities so that you leave this webinar better prepared to teach about bees and other pollinators in a meaningful way. There will be numerous opportunities for active participation and discussion\, so come prepared with your pollinator-related questions! \nThis webinar is a follow-up to our Summer 2022 issue of Green Teacher magazine (# 132) about wild native bees\, produced in collaboration with Friends of the Earth Canada. SUMMARY:Wild About Pollinators: Attracting and Teaching about these Winged Wonders
DESCRIPTION:There’s lots of concern about pollinators. We’ve all heard the bad news about drastic declines. But the specifics — who are the pollinators\, what are some of the complex relationships between plants and pollinators? what can we do to support pollinators? — these questions are full of nuance\, and sometimes\, even\, surprises. This webinar explores the importance of pollinators to all life on earth\, and offers the tools we need to support these fascinating insects. \nLorraine Johnson has been writing about native plants and habitat regeneration for 30 years\, in popular books such as 100 Easy-to-Grow Native Plants for Canadian Gardens; The New Ontario Naturalized Garden; Grow Wild!; and her most recent\, co-authored with Sheila Colla\, A Garden for the Rusty-Patched Bumblebee. Lorraine is involved in many community organizations\, such as Project Swallowtail\, and has served on the Boards of the North American Native Plant Society\, LEAF\, Wild Ones\, and other organizations. Her advocacy work includes efforts to reform grass and weeds bylaws in support of biodiversity. What unites her work is the need to reconcile with nature in a healthy relationship. SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and the Future of EE
DESCRIPTION:How can environmental education better embrace environmental justice education to foster a critical understanding of the environment within the context of human political and social actions? Many marginalized communities experiencing environmental injustices are also those most vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis. Environmental educators have a unique opportunity to empower communities living within impacted areas to take a stand for justice with the tools necessary to make change. Environmental educators can also educate those outside of impacted areas to stand up for global environmental justice. Join Parker McMullen Bushman as she discusses the connections between socio-cultural inequities\, environmental issues\, and the power of EE to make change. Register here.

SUMMARY:STEAM and Earth Science A Hybrid Focus Workshop - Grades 4-6 Educators
DESCRIPTION:Dive into an exploration of space as you explore Earth’s systems and the Earth’s place in the universe. Using current research and recent discoveries in the field of astronomy\, including images from NASA space exploration and telescopes\, participate in phenomena and inquiry-based investigations that will bring creativity to astronomy through STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art and Math). During the remote sessions the elements and principles of art will help guide our exploration of space and planetary bodies\, and help us make sense of landscape scale processes on Earth. During an in-person session at the Springfield Science Museum\, we will have the opportunity to use telescopes to expand our understanding of the scale and relationship of the planets\, sun and other stars to the Earth. You will leave the program with inquiry-based STEAM investigations to share with your students\, as well as connections to a community of learners and informal science institutions. \n\n\n\nUsing the lens of STEAM we will: \n\nuse images from space exploration to develop an anchoring phenomenon\nexplore commonalities between Earth’s geological features and those on other planet/planetary bodies\nidentify patterns in motion within our solar system\, galaxies and the universe.\napply examples of\, and resources for\, place-based and phenomena-based unit planning to create a storyline driven unit outline\nuse physical models and digital interactives to make sense of the Earth-Sun-Moon system\nexplore how drawing forms are connected to geological land forms through review and interpretation of telescopic and space exploration images\ncreate “stories” for planetary bodies using common drawing forms\nexplore the lunar surface using telescopes and digital images using elements of art to aid interpretation\n\n\n\nSuggestions for accessing/purchasing classroom telescopes and engaging in amateur astronomy will be included in the program materials.\n\n\nRegistration Information:\nDates and Times:\nRemote Sessions: Wednesday\, January 18th and Wednesday\, February 15th\, 2023 (3:30 PM – 6:30 PM ET)\nOn-Site Planetarium Session: Saturday\, January 28th (2:00 PM – 8:00 PM ET) \nLocation: Springfield Science Museum \nCost: FREE for eligible MA educators that qualify through MA DESE’s OAPL program and includes a $150 stipend. $200 per educator from non-qualifying schools. \nPDPs and Optional Graduate Credit: 12 PDPs are available without graduate credit. 22.5 PDPs and 1 graduate credit from Cambridge College are available for $75. \nCollaborating Partners: Springfield Science Museum; Bassett Planetarium (part of the Beneski Museum at Amherst College)
