SUMMARY:NAAEE23: Together We Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Conference: October 17–20 \nOur 2023 conference will focus on the importance of collaboration\, creativity\, and crossing boundaries to address the environmental and social issues we face. None of us can tackle these issues alone; we need stronger collaborations\, more diverse partnerships\, and insights from people with varying backgrounds\, perspectives\, and ideas. As soccer great Pelé said\, “No individual can win a game by himself.” We also can’t address the systemic injustices that have marginalized so many unless we understand the shared roots of social and ecological crises and collectively work with intention toward justice. Together\, we can build a sustainable future where everyone thrives.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Play-Based Learning: An Unlearning Series
DESCRIPTION:In the last ten years\, we have seen a groundswell in outdoor and nature-based preschools and an abundance of outdoor play-based learning programs situated on or near school grounds across North America. The possibilities for play are endless\, yet the challenges many educators face are equal in measure. It is important to think through our intentions within outdoor programs and understand the structures and engrained ways of thinking that have made them so necessary. \nWe believe that when children learn through outdoor play\, there are infinite opportunities to learn and unlearn\, in other words\, to grow and to let go. Likewise\, as educators adopt a playful mindset\, there are endless opportunities to learn and unlearn pedagogical and systemic practices that no longer serve our aim for a just world. \nOur shared wonderings: What is possible in outdoor play-based learning? How can we keep ourselves from reproducing our indoor challenges outdoors? What is the role of the educator in play-based learning? What practices invite self-agency and freedom? What do interactions between educator and child look like in outdoor play-based learning? Lastly\, how do we explore outdoor play-based learning from a reflective\, anti-oppressive\, liberatory lens? \nThis 6-part virtual series invites educators and play practitioners to wonder and uncover our assumptions and expectations for play. We will work towards collective transformation through outdoor play-based learning by weaving together research\, practical experience\, individual reflection and insights for a playful future. \nDates:\n\nMonday\, October 16th\nMonday\, October 23rd\nMonday\, October 30th\nMonday\, November 6th\nMonday\, November 13th\nMonday\, November 20th

SUMMARY:Nature School for Teachers: Schoolyard Habitats
DESCRIPTION:Nature School for Teachers is an opportunity for K-8 teachers to immerse themselves in science by exploring their local habitat\, and meaningfully connect with the science practices embedded in the Massachusetts Science Frameworks. Mass Audubon educators and scientists will facilitate hands-on engagements with nature\, rich discussions\, and content-rich presentations. Participants will practice field science and inquiry-based learning methods by studying and exploring local habitats\, conducting field research\, and designing investigations and field experiences that will have direct applicability to their classroom. The course will introduce principles of ecology (ecosystems\, habitats\, adaptation\, food webs\, cycles and systems\, energy flow\, and the influence of climate change)\, and highlight their connections to the earth\, life\, and physical science standards. Facilitators will suggest methods and resources for helping students learn and practice science through the exploration of their schoolyards and neighborhoods\, and will model practical ways to teach in an outdoor environment. \nParticipants will reflect on their experiences by keeping a field journal and\, as a final project\, will create a field experience and study tools to be used by their students\, reporting back on the experience at a later date. \n24 PDPs\, 1 optional graduate credit from Worcester State University for $125\, due upon initial registration. \n  \n\n\nMon\, Jul 17\, 2023\n9:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\nTue\, Jul 18\, 2023\n9:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\nWed\, Jul 19\, 2023\n9:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\nThu\, Jul 20\, 2023\n9:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\nWed\, Nov 01\, 2023\n4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
