River Ecology and Canoe Program Instructor
Location: Topsfield, MA
Sanctuary: Ipswich River

Lead educational canoe trips on the Ipswich River for adults and children of all ages, as well as an optional opportunity to lead other programs on the sanctuary as needed. These programs emphasize group cooperation, nature study, and experiential learning.

– Prepare, maintain, and inspect canoe trip materials
– Participate in and oversee River Ecology and other canoe programs
– (Optional) Help develop and co-lead programming for teens such as our
homeschool for ages 11 to 16 class and our Teen Conservation Club
– (Optional) Lead other school, scout, birthday, and family programs on the

– At least 21 years of age
– Education: B.A. or B.S. in education or related degree with appropriate
work experience
– Experience in leading outdoor natural history activities relating to local
environments, especially freshwater ecology, wetlands, watersheds, and
the natural and cultural history of rivers
– Ability to work cooperatively and independently
– Interest in and understanding of children of all ages (especially middle and
high school aged youths), and a desire to share outdoor experiences with
– Canoe experience, ability to teach paddling skills, and to lift canoes off of
and onto canoe rack
– American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification
– Certification in American Canoe Association or American Red Cross Basic
– Water Rescue and Small Craft Safety – Canoe
– Preference give to applicants with current Life Guard certification
– Must pass background check (CORI and SORI)

HOURS: As needed Monday through Friday, occasional weekends

DATES: Canoe programs run several times a month May through October
Optional additional teaching programs year round
River Ecology Training: Thursday April 27th, 2017
Canoe Safety Certification (if needed): Friday June 16th, 2017
