Job Description


URI's Environmental Education Center is seeking a qualified individual to coordinates all aspects of an eight-week free-swim waterfront program on a 75-acre freshwater lake including direct supervision and training of all waterfront staff and of all campers, ages 5-17 during waterfront aquatic activities. Provides direct supervision, training, and on-going practice and enrichment sessions to two lifeguards and over 30 camp staff members when engaged in water activities. Responsible for the camp's compliance with all waterfront regulations and policies. Must provide water safety and canoe (small craft) safety training to staff and campers and lead waterfront festivals and other special events as needed. The waterfront manager assists the camp coordinators with other camp activities when requested and prepares a year-end written evaluation of the waterfront program. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.



The URI Environmental Education Center is situated on 2,300 acres of forests, wetlands, and old farmland—the W. Alton Jones Campus. Dedicated to environmental education, the Center has been offering quality day and residential programs for over 30 years. The residential camp facilities for campers ages 8-13 include a knotty pine dining lodge with field stone fireplaces, hardwood floors, and five meeting rooms. The six cabins have electricity and are complete with bunkbeds, hot showers, and lavatory facilities. Each cabin sleeps between sixteen and twenty campers. Teen expeditions for ages 12-17 include backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, and rockclimbing/rappelling in nearby conservation areas. Farm and Forest Day Camp for ages 5 to 11 includes animal and garden care and ecology studies. All camps utilize the private waterfront.


Qualifications The Waterfront Manager Applicants must hold current Rhode Island Non-surf Lifeguard Certification (includes a minimum of Standard First Aid, adult/infant/child CPR or CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding and passing the Rhode Island Non-surf test) and a valid driver's license. Certification as an American Red Cross Small Craft Safety Course Instructor is preferred. All certifications must be current for the entire summer. Previous lifeguarding experience required; canoe and swim instruction experience, Water Safety Instructor, or Lifeguard Instructor preferred. (Note: We offer a lifeguarding course in June generally Monday-Friday the week before staff training begins at a cost of $225 plus $20 for Rhode Island certification.) Must have at least six weeks pervious experience in a management or supervisory position at a similar aquatic area (or have completed aquatics management or supervision training from a nationally-recognized aquatics organization). Must be 21 years or older by July 1. All final applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check.
Compensation $12.00 per hour
