Presenter Workshop Design

The theme the 2012 MAST/MSELA Conference is: Teach to the Future.

We hope to provide teachers of science at all levels with the content, strategies, and skills, necessary for teaching science in the 21st century. Teachers who attend your workshop should experience new and innovative ways of teaching.

From A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas

Please consider the following questions as you design your workshop:

• How will students actively engage in science and engineering practices and apply crosscutting concepts to deepen their understanding of the core ideas in these fields?

Examples of crosscutting concepts:

Patterns;

Cause and effect: mechanism and explanation;

Scale, proportion, and quantity;

Systems and system models;

Energy and matter: flows, cycles, and conservation;

Structure and function; and,

Stability and change

• How will students engage with fundamental questions about the world and with how scientists have investigated and found answers to these questions?
• How will we prepare students to be critical consumers of scientific information related to their everyday lives?
• How are we preparing students to assume their roles as citizens in this technology rich and scientifically complex world?
