The Hitchcock Center is hiring enthusiastic, experienced educators to teach its nature camp program. Our 2017 program runs from July 3 – August 18 with mandatory staff training from June 26 – 30. The goal of the Hitchcock Center’s Nature Summer Camp is to build environmental literacy and a sense of place by investigating the natural world through nature hikes, inquiry activities, games and songs every day. Staff is expected to have the safety and needs of the campers as their first priority. Applicants should have a genuine love of children, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and lots of patience. Staff must have a lot of energy, as camp days are full of activities and transitions. They should demonstrate caring for the environment and a curiosity about the natural world in their everyday lives. Responsibilities:
• Lead groups of up to 16 children ages 5-11 in classroom, outdoor and field trip settings
• Plan and teach dynamic lessons with themes of natural history, natural systems, physical science, sustainability, and related topics
• Support campers’ physical and emotional well-being and diverse learning styles
• Model behavior appropriately and use positive behavior management techniques
• Guide and mentor CITs and junior counselors ages 13-18
• Conduct self professionally and warmly with staff and camp families
• Maintain an organized work environment and assist with daily camp set-up and clean-up
• Meet with camp directors and staff to discuss questions, concerns, or conflicts
• Drive 15-passenger van on field trips

Qualifications:
• Summer camp or teaching experience with children ages 5-11
• A working knowledge of New England natural history
• Ability to work independently and with a co-counselor
• Excellent communication skills and a friendly manner
• Passion and curiosity about the natural world
• Current CPR and First Aid certification prior to start of camp season
• Ability to lift 40 lbs.
• Pass Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information background check
• Documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
• A clean driving record
